Parquet Floor Polishing

Parquet flooring is made up of small pieces of wood (parquet blocks or strips) arranged in geometric patterns, creating intricate and visually appealing designs. These pieces are often made of hardwood and are carefully joined together to form larger panels or directly installed in a mosaic pattern onto a sub floor. Parquet flooring offers a classic, sophisticated look and, like solid hardwood, can be sanded and refinished multiple times. However, due to its intricate pattern, repairs can be more complex and costly than with simpler wood flooring installations.

What is parquet floor polishing?

Parquet floor polishing is the process of restoring and enhancing the beauty of parquet flooring. Parquet floors are made of small, carefully arranged blocks of wood, forming intricate patterns. Polishing goes beyond cleaning; it involves smoothing the surface, repairing any damage, and applying a protective finish to preserve the wood and its pattern.  The specific process depends on the type of wood, existing finish (if any), and the desired level of shine.

What is the process of polishing parquet floors?

The process is similar to polishing other wood floors but requires extra care due to the intricate patterns and smaller pieces of wood:

  • Cleaning:  Thoroughly clean the floor to remove dirt, dust, and debris. Vacuuming and damp mopping are essential.
  • Inspection and Assessment: Carefully inspect the floor for damage, loose pieces, gaps, or significant scratches. This step is crucial for planning the necessary repairs.
  • Repairing:  Address any damage.  This may involve re-gluing loose blocks, filling gaps with wood filler matching the parquet’s color and repairing damaged pieces (replacement blocks).
  • Sanding (if necessary): If the floor has a damaged finish, scratches, or unevenness, sanding is necessary. This typically uses progressively finer grits of sandpaper, starting with coarser grits to remove imperfections and finishing with finer grits for a smooth surface.  Special care is needed around the edges and patterns to avoid damaging them.
  • Screening (optional): A light sanding with very fine grit sandpaper to further refine the surface before applying a finish.
  • Applying Finish: Apply a suitable finish, such as polyurethane, varnish or oil. Multiple coats are usually applied, with light sanding between coats to ensure a smooth, even finish. The type of finish should be chosen carefully based on the existing finish (if any) and the type of wood used in the parquet.
  • Buffing/Polishing: Once the finish is dry, buffing or polishing may be necessary to achieve the desired level of shine and smoothness.

Why should we polish our parquet floor periodically?

  • Protection: Regular polishing protects the finish from wear and tear, preventing scratches, stains, and water damage. This preserves the parquet’s longevity and appearance.
  • Enhanced Appearance: Polishing restores the wood’s natural luster and brings out the beauty of the parquet pattern.
  • Longevity: Proper maintenance through polishing extends the lifespan of the parquet floor, saving on costly replacements.
  • Hygiene: Cleaning and polishing helps remove allergens and contaminants, improving indoor air quality.

What are the concerns in polishing parquet floors?

  • Damage: Improper sanding or using the wrong finish can permanently damage the parquet. Professional expertise is crucial to avoid this.
  • Cost: Professional polishing can be expensive, particularly for larger or intricately patterned parquet floors.
  • Time: The process is time-consuming due to the careful attention required for repairs and sanding.
  • Chemicals: Finishes may contain harsh chemicals, so proper ventilation is necessary, and eco-friendly options should be considered.
  • Dust: Sanding generates dust, so appropriate precautions and thorough cleanup are essential.
  • Matching Wood: Repairing damaged pieces requires finding wood that closely matches the existing parquet, which can be challenging.
